A whirlwind of glitter, hairspray, and ballgowns crowd the salon. Little princesses and superheroes beam as they get a special salon experience.
The Princess Superhero event for kids aged 3-10 was hosted by the school’s cosmetology program Feb 22. The $30 package included a hairstyle, color hairspray, a mini manicure, light glitter makeup, face paint, a temporary tattoo, and refreshments.
“I think the most important thing is just to have fun,” cosmetology teacher Linda Bahena Reyes said. “Like little kids, they’re here for the experience, and they just want to have fun. And the students can actually practice their skills, like if they want to do their hair and the techniques that they learn in the class, they can showcase their work and their art.”
Bahena Reyes said she got the idea for the event four years ago when she saw other schools in the area doing it. She thought it would be a good way to raise awareness and money for the program.
“We do this event to help make money and just show kids what we do and let them have fun,” junior Charlee Leslie said. “Just talking to them, meeting people, and making them feel all pretty. This is good practice talking to people as well as kids are brutally honest.”
The kids were dressed up in either their favorite princess or superhero costume. They also got the chance to watch a movie and enjoy snacks.
“It’s pretty fun, for cosmetology, we have a lot of events just to get experience,” senior Alaina Dodson said. “And this one’s just pretty fun for them. You get to dress up and invite a bunch of people. So, if you have siblings or anything it’s pretty fun.”
Events like this are great practice for seniors who want to pursue cosmetology as a future career.
“A lot of the girls in the program are gonna go and work in salons and stuff, and go do hair and nails, and it’s good practice, with talking to people and getting clients and all that,” Dodson said.
Parents acan attendthis event and see their children get a salon experience. Math teacher and parent Erica Bowman brought her 7-year-old daughter Molly to the event.
“It’s so much fun because she comes to get pampered. They treat it like a salon experience,” Bowman said. “She loves it. It’s exciting because they make it an experience for all the kids, and it’s just a great feature. They just all look adorable when they’re done. {The students} are doing a great job. They all interact with the kids so well, and they’re just super respectful.”
Parent Candice Perry said she brought her two kids because it sounded like a fun event.
“I think everybody wants to be pampered, you know, no matter what the age is,” Perry said.
